My body is just a running tendinitis: 2/15-21 Weekly Wrap

This past weekend was the polar opposite of the previous weekend, no polar vortex in sight. Yes, I went there. Why couldn’t my birthday be 60F? Oh my, Saturday was such a lovely day. And so tempting to run, but it was a rest day, and right now my ankle needs some TLC.

Don’t forget to let us know how your week went at the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin.

Running update
So running is still going pretty good, slowly progressing my weekly mileage and my long runs.

Except . . . a couple of weeks ago I noticed some soreness on the top of my left ankle after my long run. It was really just a blip, I barely noticed it and really didn’t think that much about it.

After the next week’s long run? Yeah, it caught my attention more. Didn’t hurt at all during the run, but the next morning, I was slightly hobbling down the stairs. And then a couple of hours later felt fine.

I was overdue for a chiropractor appointment, so I made one. Of course the first thing to pop into my mind was stress fracture. Only I’m really not running that hard or that long yet. A little googling and my bet is on tendinitis.

I continued to run. I was afraid of that chiro appointment, but she said I could keep running! I had started to ice the ankle and tape it as a precaution, and she showed a different way to tape it (I was really just guessing).

She’s not completely sure what it is, but said my ankles are really tight and basically I should stretch the $#%t out of it. And ice and tape. But it’s okay to run on it (I’m sure it would heal faster if I took a running break, but my half is a couple of months away; I’d do it if I had to but am happy that right now, anyway, I don’t have to.

The tea from afternoon tea

Weekend Favorites
I suppose Friday is part of the weekend, right? My friend wanted to take me out for a belated birthday lunch, and I had a coupon to a local tea house that was expiring. Win-win. I shared the deliciousness that ensued on Instagram, by the way.

Yes, I was pretty thrilled

I have been getting catalogs from Soft Surroundings forever. Such cute loungewear, but pricey (what isn’t these days). I treated myself to a top from their outlet and I love it! But I didn’t take a photo of it, Friday was a busy day. #bloggerproblems.

Working on the ankles

I also stumbled across Jill Miller’s Yoga Tuneup line over on Amazon, and immediately bought the lower body DVD. And obviously started using it right away. More stretching than yoga, but lots of innovative stuff there and I think I’m already hooked. It remains to be seen whether or not it’s helping, it’s only been a few days.

I also started with Yamuna Foot Fitness DVD again (I didn’t pay full price for this, but I did use my own money to buy it), I’ve used this on and off but lately it’s been mostly off. Don’t you love how you get injured or almost injured and suddenly you find the time?

A little runfie fun mid-long run

Darlene and I also met up for our long runs this weekend. Saturday was just amazing — 60 and sunny! But very windy.

Obviously we didn’t run Saturday.

Much cooler Sunday but actually really good weather for a long run; I just wish it could have been sunny both days! Darlene did 4 miles before I met up with her to do 8. Dowhill out, which of course means uphill back . . . oh yes, positive splits! Except for the last mile. Some days I do like to push the last mile so I’m running hard on tired legs, cause that’s what you do in a half.

I’m happy to report Monday morning that, while the ankle is still not normal, after a faster and harder run yesterday, I didn’t have to hobble downstairs this morning.

And that’s a wrap!

Any tips for stretching out the ankles?

I forgot to add that I am participating in Kristy’s Grow Your Blog Hop for the first time (thank you, Kristy, for hosting it!) but I am sure it won’t be the last time. It’s a fun way to discover new blogs!

  1. There’s so many tendons and ligaments in the ankles–it would be helpful to have a more specific diagnosis! Is the pain in the front, the side, or the back of the ankle? The pain could also be originating from tightness in your feet. Whatever it is, I hope it goes away!

    1. It’s in the front.

Maybe at some point I’ll see a podiatrist, but it is actually much better this week after a longer, harder run. I think the taping helped a lot.

I do trust my chiropractor a lot — I’ve been running injury free, for the most part, since seeing her regularly, and she works with the olympic training teams at times, too.

But she is a chiropractor, not a podiatrist or orthopedist, obviously.

It could even be linked to running shoes that were getting on the older side, although I’ve never had pain there before so it was really totally weird, but that’s the way my body tends to operate — things just hurt our of the blue.

  2. Ooo, hope your ankle feels better. I find if I give myself a couple days rest things usually feel a lot better. I always make sure to get out of bed slowly and do some stretching, rotating of ankles before, to warm up the joints before putting lots of weight on them.

    1. Ha! Like you have lots of weight.

I’m actually not running all that much — only 3 x week right now, and not high mileage, which is why it’s so weird.

But I’m very encouraged that it feels better than last week & will continue to tape, ice, and stretch.

  3. I eased dropped on your comment to Wendy. I would try living in compression socks and doing a lot of rotations. I always dread when a new ache pops up. If your shoes are getting some miles on them it can’t hurt to get a new pair. Walking the dog even in the old shoes could contribute. Of course I am so sensitive to injury now, i am going to worry wart for you! I hope you feel better soon!
A birthday lunch sounds nice 🙂

    1. Oh yes, I didn’t mention the fact that I AM living in compression socks for the most part. And yes, I ordered new shoes last week too! And am thinking about getting fitted for shoes again as well.

But thanks for your concern & suggestions — you’re so sweet & they’re appreciated.

Oh yeah, and now Darlene & I have plans to go back there after our long run in a couple of weeks . . . we were almost going to do it this week, but thankfully she has something else to go to. Because I don’t think that’s really such a great idea for me 2 weeks in a row!

  4. Do you do ankle rotations? I typically don’t have ankle/feet problems (except for that brief episode of PF last summer), but I am hyper aware of every creek or strange sensation. I sometimes get a weird “strained” feeling on the top of my left foot, kind of right below the ankle. Ankle rotations seem to help. Love that fun pic of you and Darlene 😉

  5. I’m really sorry your having trouble in your ankles.
I got achillies tendonitis from working on my feet too much in the wrong shoes, and it’s been a battle now for 3 years, its been awful to recover from.
Did the Dr. give you the tendinitis diagnosis? While stretching eventually comes into play, as someone who’s been to specialist after specialist and PT over the years. I can tell you this, you do NOT want to stretch it too much right now if it is tendonitis, that will just inflame it and make it so much worse.
Once the pain is gone, they do have you begin stretching it, but you do it so easily its more of a gentle pull and you never will want to over stretch it again because it can come back so quickly.
If it keeps up, I’d highly recommend getting into a foot and ankle specialist, most ankle injuries if caught early can heal super fast and activity can resume soon. But if they go on to long they can be a bear, this I know.
Good luck with it, I feel for ya it’s no fun to have pains in that area!!!

    1. Right now I’d say the pain is only a 1-2 on a scale of 1-10; the previous week it was more like 4-5, so for now, I think I’m dealing with it right.

I’ve had tendinitis in my wrist & both elbows, so I know what a bear it can be to deal with & that there really are no quick fixes.

This is just so odd — it came out of nowhere & I’ve never had foot problems!

  6. I hate those little niggles we hardly notice them until later then it’s like oh yea I felt that before. My ankles bothered me on a hilly run back in the fall but only the last mile or so, then was fine after rest. I hope yours is too! Kristy’s hops are so much fun, a lot of work especially with the Weekly Wrap but still fun! I’m glad you got in Judy!

  7. I’ve had a lot of experience with ankles, but never with pain in the front. I agree with Kristy. Be careful not to overstretch. Hopefully, a little more rest is all it needs. Afternoon tea sounds like a lovely way to celebrate your birthday. You and Darlene look so cute. Thanks for linking with us Judy.

    1. I know, pain in the front is so weird & I’ve never had foot problems.

I really do think it may be tendinitis & I know that can take some time. Having had it in my wrist & both elbows.

It’s not super painful by any means but it’s also just not normal by any means. 😞

  8. Wait….I missed your birthday!!! Happy Belated birthday…sorry I missed it!

I went to the podiatrist the other day for some ankle pain..he didnt find anything wrong and recommended heat to warm it up and ankle rolls to loosen followed by icing to relax it. I have to admit, I have not done either yet.

Afternoon tea….reminds me of my tea party baby shower 🙂

The blog hop is so much fun isn’t it….lots of work but fun none the less 🙂

Have a good week! and see you on the hop!

    1. I never actually said when it was. 😏

Oh, I have been icing – it definitely helps a lot. But yeah, that’s a pain too!

Your shower must’ve been so much fun! There was a woman there with her baby & apperently she’d had her shower there.

  9. Hello from the blog hop!! I hope your ankle continues to get better! It’s so frustrating have aches and pains! Bi had some pain in my leg right above my ankle and I started wearing compression sleeves or socks and got some Super Feet insoles and the pain is gone!

    1. The last couple of days it’s been almost completely normal; Tuesday it was more painful — can tendons have DOMs?

I might get to the bottom of it if I saw a dr, but then again, I might not. I tend to be a bit dr averse.

It’s not like I’m hobbling around, because that would certainly get me to the dr.

      Anyhoo, thanks, Debra!
