Celebrating the Big 9-0: 3/21-27 Weekly Wrap

Yup, I take after the Lester side of the family

Last year, quite frankly, we were not sure my Dad would make it to 89. Last Friday he celebrated his 90th birthday. My parents were the babies of their families by quite a few years; I am the baby of mine, also by quite a few years. The upside to that is that I come from a long-lived family and still have my parents in my life, for now, anyway.

Don’t forget to let us know how your week went at the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin.

Running update
It was a challenging week for running — just some tough workouts, a lot of headwind, and never quite getting up to the pace I was trying to hit. But I gave it my all.

For the third week in a row the weather was nice enough for me to run to the grocery store to do my shopping. And then Thursday it was finally warm enough to run in a tank top without a jacket over it! A bit chilly when I started, since it was still windy, but I am finally learning (sometimes) and dressing down a bit.

There was a return to strength training with feeling better this week, but yoga suffered. There’s always a tradeoff.

New favorite capris

Above I’m heading out for my 9 mile run. I posted a blurry photo of these fearless capris from Skirtsports midweek, but I got my husband to take this photo so you could get a better idea. I love them! It’s like a pencil skirt that’s flattering but comfortable to run in. They actually are capris; I’m wearing black compression sleeves underneath them.

Darlene and I couldn’t mesh up our long run schedule this week. I needed to do mine Sunday (Easter). I was pleasantly surprised that my friend from USAFit agreed to accompany me my last 5 miles. And then I scored someone to run with me the first 4 miles — which was a new experience for me, as her pace is slower than mine. So it was negative splits!

Favorites of the Week
Notice how I changed Weekend favorites to favorites of the week? Makes more sense, no?, as I’m actually wrapping up the week.

3 generations celebrate a milestone

I will admit that I’m much closer to my Mom than my Dad, but I was still glad that we could be there to celebrate his 90th birthday, even if it was a day late. Especially as my sister has the plague (well, a very nasty virus) and couldn’t be there, but she was represented by her daughter. The whole immediate family will be together to celebrate next month.

2 of the 3 Musketeers (raceketeers?); and no, we didn’t coordinate our outfits!

I ran most of my long runs last summer with this lovely lady. She’s a snowbird, but she’s back and ready to train for a half soon. It actually was a nice day, but I started earlier and it was still cloudy and chilly then. It was nice to catch up with her and to hear that apparently our USAFit group will be a go — our organizer couldn’t do it this year, but Jan found out they have some new ones to pass the reigns to.

No dogs were harmed in this photo

I know that it looks like my mom is choking Lola, but I assure you Lola was loving the neck massage!

Daffodils in Poughkeepsie

I said the daffodils weren’t blooming in Albany yet, but apparently I spoke too soon — we saw some when we walked Lola today.
And that’s a wrap!

What’s blooming in your neck of the woods?

    1. Someday I absolutely must get to DC to see the cherry blossoms!

My Dad is going down next weekend on the Honor Flight (where they take down WWII vets). I hope he gets some good photos, although it’s doubtful. I don’t think he’ll remember how to use the camera, it’s been a while, and it’s somewhat hard for him to get around, but the whole thing is very cool.

  1. Wow…90! Happy Birthday, Dad! I do like those capris. I got the fearless skirt and wore it today on my treadmill run…still too cool and I’m too chicken to go outdoors in shorts/skirt.

    1. Love running outside in a skirt — oddly, I don’t usually wear them indoors to run in (although lately I’ve been staying in them after my runs). I guess I don’t wear them indoors because I don’t need the pockets?

Springter will be in full force this week with a forecast for snow for my race Sunday!

    1. Well, my gene pool is also really riddled with cancer. A brother I never knew, my grandfather, my mom is a survivor & both her brothers died at about my age. So there’s that.

Winter is supposed to return just in time for my race this weekend. ☹

  2. Daffodils are out here too… but my favorites are tulips. They are not up yet. The weather has been crazy, alternating between crazy warm days to colds days where I need a hat and gloves again.

Happy birthday to your dad ! Love the photo of the 2 of you.

    1. Tulips are a big deal in Albany, since it has Dutch roots. There’s a tulip festival. I’ve never been.

Each year I say I’m going to plant some bulbs and I never get around to it. I had some beautiful calla lilies when we lived in Austin!

  3. You are very lucky to still have both of your parents. We are celebrating my mom’s 90th this summer and I’m heading north at the end of this week to help plan the party/etc. Our azaleas have been in bloom too long already and will probably be gone by the time the Azalea Festival arrives in about 2 weeks. This seems to happen alot, they are either early or late for the big party!

  4. The daffodils have already bloomed here. We are now enjoying dogwoods and azaleas. Those are very cute capris and they are very flattering on you. How wonderful you were able to spend time with your Dad for his 90th birthday! I know you are happy to have your snowbird friend back to run with. Thanks for linking with us Judy.

    1. When I lived in TX, spring came in Feb. Here, there’s very little spring — just a few days here & there. Maybe it makes us appreciate it all the more, and then we have the last laugh in summer, which can be nice (with just a few hot days here & there).

    1. I actually do prefer the fuller skirts when it’s warmer, and I was afraid the pencil style ones just wouldn’t fit me right. I have a couple of SP capris with skirts that are just so-so — but the ones I just got, I absolutely love — and the best part is how comfortable they are (and the pockets).

  5. Good week! Happy birthday to your dad! We celebrated my Nana’s 90th birthday this past November. I hope I get to live that long! I kind of aspire to be her…. she still drives and lives on her own and everything.

I love that you and your buddy matched outfits – that happens to Kim and me a lot and we never coordinate either.

    1. Well, I’m active because I hope to live as long as my parents, but better! They do still live in their own home (although don’t get me started on that) and they still drive (and REALLY don’t get me started on my Dad driving). But they can’t do many of the things they lived — travel other than tours is now out for them. It’s hard.

      1. Oh, not once, not twice, but it’s in the forecast at least 4 times in the next week. Doesn’t mean we’ll actually get any, but you know it means it’ll be cold.

        Welcome to upstate NY!
