Post race slump: 5/16-22 Weekly Wrap

I was totally unmotivated to do any form of exercise in the beginning of the week. Not even my beloved yoga. I also had the slight problem that I wanted to eat everything in sight, preferably sweets, but I could do a good job chowing down on the mixed nuts I’d bought while we were on vacation, too.

Not a good combination!

I’m wrapping up my post race week with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin. You don’t have to be a runner to participate in the Weekly Wrap — hey, I wasn’t much a runner this week. Anyone trying to lead a healthy lifestyle is welcome to link up with us.

Running update
Maybe it was the race. Maybe it was the travel. Maybe it was the return of crazy cold weather (where were you when I needed you?), but I was really having trouble getting myself to do anything on Tuesday. There was some slight DOMs in my hamstrings (no idea why), but only a very slight twinge.

Same trouble on Wednesday. So I just decided to go with it. Although isn’t it weird how when you workout less you feel more tired?

I was trying to listen to my body. I think it was telling me it needed some more R&R. And remember, 2016’s word is respect, and part of that is respecting my body.

On Thursday at least I finished up my yoga in the afternoon, instead of waiting for right before bed.

Friday I went to the “quick” place to get my new screen for my phone put on. Let’s just say it wasn’t so quick, I left without a new screen, but I got to spend about 3 hours walking around the mall. Actually, I also did some grocery shopping. At two different stores. I was not happy.

But you can sure wrack up some serious steps walking the mall — well over 10k for the day with no run. Oddly enough, my ankle, which has been feeling pretty good with no running, ached a lot after all that walking. My guess is it was the unsupportive loafers. I wasn’t expecting to do that much walking.

After my first run back — a whole whopping mile — it felt fine. Now I have to decide if I want to run really easy for a few weeks, in the hopes of maybe getting rid of the ache once and for all. Decisions, decisions. I know it’s the smart thing to do . . . actually, I took a peek back into last year’s journal. I seriously dropped down my mileage after my halfs in May, and I didn’t have any injuries then.

Decision made. I’m not going to stop running, but I will be running less for a few weeks anyway.

Favorites of the week
I won’t lie — not a lot going on this week, obviously. No more brownie a la mode or mac n cheese. In some ways the week kind of sucked, between being tired, unmotivated to work out, coming home to a power outage, and the continuing drama with my phone.

First world problems, indeed.

usafit2016
Kickoff for USAFit Albany 2016

Saturday kicked off the 2016 season of USAFit (I think there’s still time to join, but registration will close soon), under new coaches. I’m in the brightly flowered capris on the right (Skirtsports, of course; code CRJ20 for 20% off regularly priced items).

Saturday wasn’t exactly the nicest day, although great running weather. Too bad we only ran a mile! Seriously, I still remember that feeling of accomplishment running that first mile, something I never thought I’d do. And now it’s barely a warmup — I didn’t even break a sweat, so believe me if you’re struggling, there’s definitely hope.

The biggest secret I can share? Just keep putting one foot in front of another. Seriously! It’s just that simple.

And we booked a hotel for what will potentially be my fall half, which is always exciting. Mind you, I’m not actually signed up for the race yet . . . in fact, there are a lot of races I’m planning to run in the coming months that I’m not signed up for yet!

Okay, scratch that, I am now signed up for:

phoenix

Courtesy of Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner (and Road Runner Sports). Thank you Deborah! It’s so rare that I win anything, and I’m not sure I’ve ever won anything this cool!

I won my choice of a race in San Diego, Atlanta, or Phoenix. I ruled out Atlanta immediately — too hot in September, and I’ve well established I don’t do well in the heat. Not that the other races would be cool, but they would be far less humid and probably not as hot.

We went back and forth quite a bit about the other two. Mr. Judy knows a coworker in both cities; I know bloggers in both cities; and I have relatives in San Diego (and more relatives in SoCal). What tipped the scales over to Phoenix was the fact that we wouldn’t be packing up and traveling again so soon, and it fits in very nicely into the USAFit training schedule.

I won’t lie; it was a really tough decision. The lure of the Pacific in San Diego, a city I’ve only been to once, but we had to make the call now, since San Diego was in just 6 weeks and I’d have to keep up my long runs — with Phoenix in Ocotber, I’ll be dropping my mileage down again. Of course there does look like there’s a killer hill right in the middle of the Phoenix course, and I’m not sure how scenic it really is, but my guess is that there isn’t a half PR in my future this year. All my halfs are likely to be too warm for that, but you never know.

The great thing about a free race entry? Until we book flights, it’s no big deal if we end up canceling. We’re out nothing out of pocket.

You may have noticed that I’ve actually done quite a few halfs sponsored by beer companies (Smuttynose, Shipyard, now Craft Classic, hopefully someday Yuengling in VA Beach). I don’t drink, and even when I did, I didn’t drink beer — to me, it’s like coffee — I don’t like the smell or the taste. And even though I could’ve gotten a beer for Mr. Judy, normally he’s really not interested in it that early in the morning.

Why do I always look tired?

A haircut. For a hot minute my hair looks good. The first time I’ve seen my hairdresser in 6 months (she was on maternity leave for a while), and she asked me if I’d gotten grayer. She’s so cute & bubbly, but what woman wants to be asked if they look old? Even if I do?

And that’s a wrap!

What’s the coolest thing you ever won?

Do you find it hard to stop running for a nagging ache?

  1. Your hair looks great! You do not look tired. I never win anything. Depending on the ache I either stop running or cut back. I’m pretty good about that.

  2. What an exciting prize! I wish you a fabulous trip and the best race ever.
Funny, or not, how some weeks are like that, those when nothing seems to go well. The good news is that better days await.

Thanks for all your help; I feel as though I am on a new path and feel so good about it after months of frustration.

  3. Congrats on the win…that is so cool. That would have been a tough decision for me too.

After a race, I always have a hard time staying motivated. Almost like the drop of the adrenaline after that race is over takes me out for a while.

You know me and nagging aches….so hard to just sit my a $$ down.

    1. I’m really good at sitting down, LOL! But not for too long.

The race was a really tough decision, but the timing was just right for Phoenix — we’d actually almost decided to do the Lake Powell half that same weekend !

  4. You deserved to take a few days off… your body said so!! 😀 Awesome about Phoenix!! And your hair looks great!! I’m going to take your picture in to my hairdresser and tell her, I want that because your fringe is exactly how I like! Did she use a diffuser on your curls?

    1. The days off wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t kept eating like I was still exercising . . .

The cut is called a Devacut, if that helps at all. Yes, she diffuses it. I assure you it will look nothing like that next weekend.

I have a diffuser, but I only blow it dry on really, really, really cold days. Otherwise it air dries & does its own thing, which sometimes is great and sometimes not so much.

  5. It may be weird but the less I move around the less I want too! Give me a half that morning and I can go all freaking day! Let me miss my 30 walk and I’m too tired to do anything…. How neat you won a free entry. I hate you ruled out Atlanta, but you are exactly right it will be hot in September! I think your hair looks great, People always say they can’t get it to look like it does when they leave the salon. Well I don’t let them style my hair even when I went cause mine never quite knew how to style my hair. They want to make it lay this way and that and it just does not play that game. Thanks for linking up Judy!

    1. I’m lucky — I’ve truly never had a bad haircut. All the years I lived in TX, I had the same hairdresser, but here there’s been a long line of them because they keep leaving the salon I go to — but they’re all good.

I will get to GA someday — maybe Savannah. The one in the spring though!

  6. I felt your tiredness this week, Judy. I admit, part of my problem could have been from the let down of running my last Spring half. I’ve also chosen to back off somewhat to give me feet some healing time. I plan to fill in with cycling though. That’s so cool you won a race and chose Phoenix! That will be a fun trip. I won registration into REVEL Rockies in the canyons outside of Denver and it’s been favorite half so far. I also won a race in Nashville later the same year. Thanks for linking.

  7. SO cool to win a race entry! That would be my first choice right after a bucket of money lol My hubby and I actually won Rush tickets last year, we had never won anything!! We were very excited.
I will be in low mileage mode with you, seeing if I can any improvement in my feet, I know my inserts need to be adjusted but I am afraid after the the last time he tried and i got worse.
Your hair looks good! and you don’t look tired…

    1. I do think I’d take the bucket of money first. Then you could enter any race you wanted to!

I really hope you can get some relief with your toes, but you’re doing great despite them.

I know it’s super frustrating, though.

  8. I have a free entry to one of those races as an ambassador and I’m trying to figure out if I can go to one. Phoenix in the fall would be awesome.

I’m taking a break as well. Sometimes your body just needs a little down time. (After hitting more than 30,000 steps a day last week, I haven’t hit 5000 yet today…)

    1. Of course you’re an ambassador for them. 😀

And of course you’re tired! I only did one half & only drove through 3 states. And here there were 5 bloggers all in ME at the same time & no meet ups. 😔

I’m still getting close to 10k steps a day because of Lola.

  9. Congrats on the race entry! Sometimes that’s just the spark you need to plan a racecation…not that I know anything about that..

I think it was good that you listened to your body and took it easy this week. I’m not good at that and I always regret it…

    1. I’ve gone really short, but not for a really long time — I miss a ponytail or braid too.

Which means I’m stuck in the same haircut forever, basically, but I get to play with my hair.

  10. I’m not a beer drinker either, so when there has been beer at the finish line, no thanks! It’s not even 10am and I wouldn’t even want wine that early. Can I get a to-go cup and enjoy it that evening?

  11. A race entry is awesome! Phoenix in October will hopefully not too hot. Sometimes a week off (or two) is just what you need to get back on track. I take time off every now and then to get recharged. Sounds like you needed some RNR.

    1. I just need a clone, is all!

Phoenix could still be hot in Oct (I used to live in TX). The race starts very early, and that’s kind of telling. But you never know.

We’ll probably already be in sweater weather by then!

  12. I love your hair and no, you do not look old. You look well preserved! That’s exciting you booked a hotel for your fall race. I got my hotel booked for the Chicago Marathon a month ago and honestly, that’s when it all becomes real. My sister lives in Phoenix and I visited there several times. It should be a great race place because of the lack of humidity.

    1. We’ve been to Phoenix several times, but long before I was a runner — I’ve never run there. We actually came very close to moving there once.

The lack of humidity will help, but of course you need to drink more because of the dryness, too!

  13. Congrats on winning the race entry! I would love to run in San Diego or Phoenix, I just wish it wasn’t so expensive trying to fly to the West Coast from Philly!

Injuries are so annoying, I think taking the time to rest and take it easy is so important. You body knows what it needs, we just have to listen to it!

    1. Luckily my husband used to travel a LOT for work (not so much now), so he has a lot of miles.

That definitely helps — otherwise I would have a LOT of trouble getting to all my states!

  14. I think that is the hardest thing….to decide whether to run or not to run when injured. It stresses me out to not run but sometimes I know I’m just making my leg worse. Finding the perfect balance right? The gym is ok, working out at home is ok, but nothing (to me) is as wonderful as being outside running. So YOU’RE the one that won that entry! lol I tried too. I live near San Diego but wouldn’t have been able to make that one. I would have went for AZ as well. I’ve run there only once. It was the RNR Arizona half and it’s still my overall PR. Great course 🙂 Enjoy the week ahead Judy!

    1. Sorry about that; I wanted to let Deborah know before I posted about it, and it took a while to make up our minds.

I’ve been to Phoenix quite a few times, but before I was a runner so I’ve never run there. We were actually considering a race in that area the same weekend already.

  15. So cool that you won a free race entry! I’d have had a hard time choosing between Phoenix and San Diego too. I haven’t been to either but would like to visit both.

  16. I agree with Tricia – endorphins are addicting…when I don’t workout, I don’t feel like working out the next day. It’s a vicious cycle for me!
I don’t know all of the ins and outs of your aches, but you may want to consider some strength training for targeted muscles rather than just general resistance training. That’s the personal trainer in me talking…you can ignore me if you like 😉

    1. I’ve already been to PT for my ankle. And the chiropractor, and had several sports massages . . . it’s like 90% better, most of the time not bothering me, but I just haven’t seemed to be able to find the magic exercises yet.

It’s irritated tendons, btw, but I really thought by now it would be 100% better.

The PT is very good, btw, and he’s a runner and specializes in runners.

    1. Do you have a treadmill? If I lived where you live, I wouldn’t be running outside now probably!

I always offer the beers to hubby, but seriously, who wants them at that hour of the morning? Although actually this last race it was lunchtime by the time I finished.

  18. Love your hair! And love that you won such a great race entry! How fun!

I never win anything – then last week, my mom and I cleaned up at little man’s school basket raffle and we won all kinds of great things: passes to local attractions, a hotel stay, restaurant GCs, tailgate/camping supplies and art supplies. It was a great night!
