Sometimes it’s ok to go overboard: 5/30-6/5 Weekly Wrap

It was another week of minimal movement. Our trip left me feeling on the verge of coming down with something — I was pretty sure I just needed some rest, though, and I’m happy to say my diagnosis was correct.

But I did run a 5k. I’m keeping mum on how it went because the recap will be out Tuesday, most likely.

I’m wrapping it up  with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin. Feel free to wrap up with us and let us know how your week went! You never know who you’ll inspire.

Running update
I was just burnt out after we got home very late Monday night. Too many late nights, going from warm weather to cool, being drizzled on (and not a warm drizzle) off and on for a couple of hours at the Paul Simon concert . . . it all took its toll with a scratchy throat and fatigue.

So I took it easy, even though I had signed up for the Freihofers5k last minute. It’s such a large, congested race, you know you’ll never have a PR. Plus it starts too late and is almost always hot.

By Thursday I was feeling better and despite the fact I couldn’t get out for my run until late afternoon, when the temperature had already risen to 80F (and it had been in the 50s in Seattle), the run wasn’t too bad. And I threw in some strides at the end since I had the 5k on Saturday.

All I’m sayin’ about Freihofers for now is that while it wasn’t a PR — as predicted — I was very happy with how I ran the race.

I didn’t run enough to burn off the amount of cookies I consumed!

Favorites of the week
It always amazes me how good things taste after a run. Even applesauce! There’s something to said for the whole work up an appetite thing. I am not proud to say that the Freihofers cookies were my lunch, but I don’t actually regret that I had them, either.

I think this week’s Thinking Out Loud will be musing on eating, all or nothing eating, a healthy lifestyle, etc. I have more to say about what went down with those cookies. And my relationship with them, because yes, I have a relationship with Freihofers chocolate chip cookies going back to my childhood.

Darlene & I represented Skirtsports well

Meeting up with friends at a race. Always fun. And actually going to said race with a friend for a change. I was sad I wasn’t able to hook up with my USAFit Albany buddies (I just couldn’t figure out where they were meeting!).

I signed up for the Summer Sweat Series from Fit Foodie Finds and Ambitious Kitchen. The meal plan looks great — except I’m pretty sure if I ate that many sweets, even healthy sweets, I would not be losing weight. And right now I do have a few pounds I’d like to drop. I suck at following meal plans anyway.

But I’m sure I’ll find some good new recipes (some look really good) and hopefully I’ll try some of the workouts. It’s time to buckle down while I’m not running a whole lot and see if I can get where I want to go. And hey, it’s free! Thank you, ladies, for such a great resource.

The fact that my peony plant finally has some buds on it. I’m eagerly awaiting the flowers.

She’s clean again

Mr. Judy giving Lola a bath. Most of the grooming duties (and dogwalking, and feeding, , and training) fall to me. I did help dry her off. We tag teamed her with both of us blowing her dry. That way we’re able to keep her fairly still in one place. She’s really quite good about it, although it’s clear she doesn’t like it either.

And that’s a wrap!

Have you lost it with some food lately?

Do you groom your dogs or go to the groomer?

Do you ever travel to races with a friend?

  1. I lose it with mixed nuts. I’ll serve myself a custard cup of them. And then go back for more 😦
I would lose it with potato chips, too, but I don’t keep them in the house as I totally lose control. Ditto for plain M&Ms.

We don’t have a dog, but when it comes to clipping nails or getting medications into the cats, that is my better half’s task. He’s good at it; I freak out.

I’m looking forward to your race recap; so glad it went well even without a P/R.

    1. I’m better at the meds thing, but sometimes I need a hand with it. I can do Lola’s front paws, but need help with the dew claws and the back claws (which is why the don’t get done as often as they should).

I do Giz’s claws; I just have to get him in the right mood to cooperate.

Cookies have always been a big weakness of mine, and I’ve come a long way, but every once in a while something still trips me up!

  2. I’ve totally lost it with all food lately! Since Janet has been here, my eating has been horrendous. I definitely need to reel it in. Love your’s and Darlene’s outfits for the race!! You look great! And good job just getting out there and doing that 5K and having fun! That’s one way to keep it going! Lola looks like she needs a big hug because she’s just that pretty! BTW, Meeps loves that cat toy, thank you!! I got some great video of him… it actually wears him out, it’s too funny!

    1. Glad Meeps likes it. They’re inexpensive, too. Very few cats can resist it — although Simba was never into it and once in a while there is one that doesn’t like it, but most go nuts over it. The inventor was pure genius!

  3. I lose it with ice cream and if I bought any sweets like chips, cookies and pies, I would eat them all. I haven’t open the Freihofer cookies yet. They don’t tempt me.

I usually go to races alone. I like the freedom of doing what I want after.

Don’t need to groom cats. They do it themselves. TG.

    1. I don’t lose it with ice cream, but I do tend to eat it too often if it’s in the house so I just don’t keep it in the house. If I really want some, I go get some (although there are actually some Ben&Jerrys flavors I’d love to try).

I still have to clip Gizmo’s claws and I comb him sometimes too. But no, I never have to bathe him. I did once have to do a previous cat, when I took him in as a kitten and he was covered in fleas. It’s a wonder we didn’t kill him or visa versa.

  4. I am addicted to ice cream so have to be really careful of the quantity I consume ! Which is why I have gone back logging all my food at the moment. It keeps me in line !

Hope you are feeling better and more rested. No fun to listen to a concert in the rain.

  5. Food, I’m generally doing well with my sugar free thing. I have developed a taste for 90% dark chocolate and it’s getting harder to restrict myself to my 2 large squares ration!

      1. I think I’ve built up to the 90%. I would never have eaten this kind of chocolate before, but once you lose your sweet tooth it tastes great! One day I’ll have to have a piece of galaxy just to see if I can still stomach it!!

      2. I guilt up to 85% but I think that’s as far as I go.

I never lose my sweet tooth. I’ve done sugar detox, but I like to bake, so some sugar will always be in my life. I just have to be careful with it!

  6. I can’t kick this sweet tooth and carb craving. Uuugh!!

I always travel with a friend to races. Either to run with me or to just be a support. I don’t like running races alone.

I am sure your body is thankful for the rest and ease this past week.

  7. I have traveled with a friend to a race. I just lost it with some cookies but happy that it ended up being just two rather than the two dozen that are sitting in the dining room.

    1. 2 is not losing it. Trust me on that! I would have been totally fine with eating a couple or four, but . . . that gives you some idea.

They were small cookies, but still. They’re gone now and I didn’t have any more after I got home!

  8. I just gave Cocoa a bath. She hated it but she’s still learning how to pee and her little tummy was getting pretty stinky. Eventually she’ll go to the groomer but for now I’m on dog wash duties. We’re already working on her ears. Can you believe she has an ear infection? This is how it starts!

    1. Chester seemed to have every problem under the sun, and he had floppy ears, but thankfully he never had an infection.

I did use to have to trim his ear fringe or he’d get food in it when it got too long. Luckily Lola’s ears stand up like a chis are supposed to (although we really liked Chester’s floppy ears).

I’m sorry about Matthew and your eldest, too. The only way through is forward, right?

  9. I lose it over ice cream and sweets such as chips and pies and cookies. (I don’t keep any in the house for that reason.)

I haven’t open the Freihofer’s cookies yet. I hope the hubby eats them all.

I usually go to races alone so that I can do what I want afterwards.

  10. I literally had potato chips and chocolate for dinner Friday. That was my “balanced” meal after a stressful day at work. And I wonder why these 5 lbs are sticking around! We barely brush Tiger Lilly, let alone groom her!

  11. I travel to most of my races with my friend, Barb (you’ve probably seen her in most of my blog posts LOL). We do a lot of our training runs together as well, especially the long runs. Lately, the husband has been registering for more races, and joining us for some of the training…so that’s been fun! We need to send out Max to the groomer, but we give him an occasional bath in between grooming appointments. He won’t sit still for a blow dry, though…as soon as I get him towel-dried,he’s outta there!

    1. It was cool & rainy yesterday, so she really needed to be blown dry. In fact, my husband suggested it because we got rained on on our walk & she was already wet.

How great to have your husband as your partner in crime!

  12. Ha, losing it with food happens to all of us, but yea, my obsession with ice cream has been a nightly habit for far too long. Your Lola looks great after her bath. Lulu hates to be bathed, but since I have her groomed infrequently (she hates that even worse) I try to make bath time at home not too bad. She always gets treats afterwards! Glad you had a good 5k, can’t wait to read your report.

    1. Oh, Lola absolutely got treats after that blow dry.

I don’t keep ice cream at home. It’s not really my weakness — no, cookies always have been — but I do tend to eat too large a portion size. And I only want it when it’s warm — so when I want it, I go out for it.

  13. Allie got some of her claws trimmed this weekend, which is a negotiating process since it’s just me. When I have to trim her back claws, it’s more negotiating, and promises of treats.

I found Tollhouse cookies in the freezer section, so I can bake the number I want, and the rest stays in the freezer. Oh boy!

    1. I can do the front claws by myself. I don’t do Gizmo’s back claws (wish I did, cause sometimes he digs in with them), but Lola’s have to be done because they get too long.

She’s good about it, but I need help keeping her still.

Normally I don’t have store bought cookies in the house, and I actually haven’t had a problem with these the last couple of times I ran this race.

      But no one’s perfect!

  14. My dogs only get groomed when they are boarded (like now). Otherwise, we bathe them or force them to swim. Lol. I have added a few pounds but I can’t blame it on one item. I’m just eating more I guess and not really any sweets—and that really gets my goat—’cause I want to. Thanks for your support of the WW Judy!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. WW will always be Weight Watchers to me. 🙂 And weight gain for me is almost always sweets, too — at least when I’m at home. On the road it’s often no healthy choices or sodium.

We used to have the dogs groomed once in a blue moon when they were younger, but bathing is actually one of the few things Mr. Judy does for them on a fairly regular basis.

They don’t swim. Neither one ever showed any interest. I swear they are/were cats in dog’s bodies!

  15. You and Darlene looked great sporting your skirt sports outfits! That is some kind of teaser for us to come back and check out how your 5k ended up, so well done on that one. I have taken my Aussie dog to get groomed several times, but usually only to get cuts which is about 3 times a year. The rest of the time they get baths at home.

    1. The dogs only ever got baths at a groomer, and then only once in a while the first couple of years.

I do the nail clipping, and we also have to trim the fur on Lola’s paws — otherwise I can’t see to clip those nails.

She’s actually much better about it than Chester was. He was a real drama queen when it came to nail clipping. Pulling back his paw, yelping when I hadn’t even done anything . . .

The race recap is up now. 🙂 It’s long, though, you’ve been warned!

I traveled to run RNR Chicago last year to meet up with old college friends and we plan to do it more often in the future.
Hope you’ll regain your energy soon!

  17. Sweets are my weakness. I try not to keep them around the house, but I do have a tendency to go overboard when we travel. I look forward to reading your 5K recap! Looks like a fun race! Lola looks so cute after her bath. My dog doesn’t require much grooming. Thank goodness cause it can get kinda expensive.

    1. Lola doesn’t require a lot of grooming, either, but she does need baths, nail trimming, trimming the fur on her pads, combing . . . seems like there’s always something to do.

Sweets are definitely my weakness too.
