Running updates 


 Monday


I’ve become really good at started out slow lately. I hope that helps me in my half! Usually by about mile three I seem to hit a normal pace for me.

Today’s tempo was 1 mile WU & CD, with 2 miles at tempo in the middle (using my normal run/walk intervals). It went pretty good, despite very slow WU & CD — maybe because this was the day after Bandit woke me up at 1:30 am to go outside?

The tempo miles went well. Although we’re enjoying some lovely fall weather, I’m getting out later in the day to try to run when it’s warmer, since my race will be warm. Maybe very warm.

Tuesday


I’ve been experimenting with slightly different run/walk intervals — I won’t use them in my race, as I haven’t trained with them. But 30 seconds is barely enough time to whip out a water bottle . . . so I’ve been trying a 45 second walk interval.

Today was an easy run, and those first two miles were so slow. But by the third mile my pace naturally dropped to fairly normal.


Friday


In an attempt to stay heat acclimated, I set out for my last short “long” run midday on Friday. It was in the low 70s, but low humidity — that actually should mimic race day conditions pretty well.

I’d been jonesing for a run — the previous two days had been just beautiful, but alas, runs weren’t scheduled for those days and at this point I knew I was better off taking it easy.

And easy does it it was. Without trying to I sort of mimicked a race: it felt easy at first, I wa running negative splits, but as I heated it up it felt harder and I slowed down. Which kind of made me a little mad, so I made an effort the last mile and it was my best mile. I aslo threw in a few fartleks earlier on because that particular route as a row of trees that just calls out for fartleks.


Saturday


3 easy treadmill miles before breakfast. A busy day, but it was fine  — always good to get in early morning miles. 


Favorites of the week
When your husband says he’s signed up for an all you can eat Yelp event at your favorite local chocolate shop . . . but it’s the day before your first of the month weigh in at Weight Watchers . . . what do you do?

Obviously, I chose to go. I knew I had enough of a cushion for it not to be a problem, and it wasn’t. I also didn’t eat everything in sight. You could ask to try almost anything in the store, and they also had chocolate dipped strawberries, fudge, and chocolate butter crunch bars out (I took home some strawberries, but sampled the fudge and the chocolate butter crunch bars).

My strategy was to just take a couple of bites and throw the rest out for most things: pumpkin truffle, strawberry cheesecake truffle, salted dark chocolate caramel, the fudge, the butter crunch.I did eat everything chocolate peanut butter, because that’s my jam, so to speak: the nougat bar (like a snickers — my favorite), the crunchy peanut butter ball, and the mini peanut butter cup. Thankfully they also provided us with free water — I needed it with all that sugar!

That fact that I can fit two 6 ounce flipbelt water bottles (amazon affiliate link) into one pocket on a sparkleskirt.

These little tabs (amazon affiliate link) have seriously saved me from wanting to murder Bandit. They’re for diarrhea, which he is prone to due to anxiety (I think). While we’re still struggling a bit in that department, despite being boarded and having to go out in the middle of the night once, there has been no days of let’s go out every two hours round the clock. Thank you, God!

  1. Um, that picture of you in the pink outfit? You are looking SO STRONG! Your arms are killer! Ok, just had to point that out. πŸ™‚
    I am not a chocolate fan, but give me a good crème Brule and I am in heaven.
    Spinning out of control? hmmmm….yup, that’s me most days but thankfully each day I can reel it back in. The operative word being “most.”
    I prefer to ‘race’ in cooler temps, but not cold. LOL!

  3. All the treats look so goooood! I like your strategy. I usually only take bites that have all the elements i like! Like the crunchy part or the filling…
    I like sunshine when it is 40 or 50 degrees out. Most days over cast and cold is fine lol but you know it is always humid here.
    I am floored your skirt held bottles with out bouncing out!

    1. The bottles don’t fall out. Skirtsports only hold one bottle per pocket but they stay put there, too.

      I like cool with sun but some clouds & preferably not much wind.

      Definitely won’t get that Sunday but that’s ok.

  4. I prefer to run in cooler temps. Fall running is my favorite. The weekend weather here has been perfect for fall racing for the past 3 weeks and I haven’t raced once. That’s OK ! Training has priority at the moment. Four more weeks ! Are you coming down to NYC ?

    1. I love fall racing — less chance of rain than spring! Although you just never know.

      Training definitely should be your priority now!

      Unless something happens I do plan to be in NYC. Course we haven’t actually planned how we’re getting there yet.

  5. Chocolate tasting sounds so fun! I need to check out Yelp and see if they have any fun events like that in Philly! Nice job with your runs, it seems like you’ve got a great strategy for being acclimated to the weather for your race.

    1. It was fun. Except 40 people trying to squeeze into a very small shop. My husband does a lot of reviews on Yelp which is how he knew about it.

      I’m not sure how heat acclimated I’ll really be but I’ve tried.

  6. Oh no the timing of the all you can eat event and WW check in is so not good! But hey you did great! I love chocolate covered strawberries!
    I don’t think I could run with water bottles attached to my hips! I have enough junk in the trunk to not add more lol.
    Racing hot or cold weather? Humm ask me when it gets below freezing here and I’ll change my mind! But then again my idea of cold and your idea are not the same. πŸ™‚

  7. So nice of your husband to buy tickets for the chocolate event. Too bad it was right before WW!

    What is your current Run/Walk interval now that you upped your walking to 45 sec? Also, please tell me more about these Flipbelt water bottles? Can you actually run comfortably with those bottles in the pocket of your skirt? Do those bottles fit comfortably inside the actual Flipbelt? How does this all work? inquiring minds want to know….lol

    By the way THANK YOU for your suggestion on the Arnicare bruise cream. I found it at my local CVS today! Crossing my fingers it helps the healing process!

    1. I vary my intervals depending on the length of the run. I’m not sure 45 second for the walk break works for me; I’ll be using 30 seconds during my race because that’s what I trained with (2 minutes run for a half)

      Yes, I often put a bottle in my skirt picket. And yes, they do go in a flipbelt & I’ve run that way, too.

      But I don’t use the flipbelt in a race – because my next 3 halfs will most likely be warm, though, I need to make sure to have some water with me. I’ve had races run out of water & just ruin my race in hot races too many times now!

      1. Wait, if the race will be warm and you will need water, why won’t you use the flipbelt and the bottle that goes in it? I’m very intrigued by this whole flip belt water bottle concept. I have a flip belt and didn’t know you could get bottles to fit in it. I might prefer that other than my camebak hydration belt. If I decide to buy it I will come back here and use your link!

      2. I plan to use the water stops, butt have 1 or both flipbelt bottles in a pocket. I use a different belt for races.

        I hadn’t heard of the flipbelt bottles until this summer, either. I prefer the less bulky belt for a race & my skirt gives me plenty of storage options.

  8. The witch decoration is so cute! Going out slowly serves me well and I strive to do it in each and every race. There’s always time to run faster later in the race. I think you will have an awesome half. I can’t say that I’d turn down chocolate anything. But, I’m prone to eat all of the serving just from the way we were raised. However, I’m very guilty of trying to get one of my kids or the hubs to finish something so I won’t have to. Thanks for linking,Judy!
