Slacker/Not Slacking:11/7-13 Weekly Wrap

There wasn’t much yoga this week. In point of fact, none. There wasn’t much cross training either. And precious little strength training, to boot.

So why am I so tired? Well, of course, there was Monday, going through more crap/stuff at my parents, visiting with my parents, driving about  2 hours home.

Next I attacked the house and some decluttering. I spent 45 minutes cataloging clothes to donate. They’d been bagged up previously, but I never got around to listing what was in the bags. I know, I know, I should do it as I go along. Except it tends to be a shirt here, three there, and before you know it.

Then there was baking. A whole lot of cooking baking. Testing out recipes for Thanksgiving.Yes, it’s a week from this Thursday.

And oh yeah, November is typically my busiest month for races. Usually I’m done with my goal races and I prefer to race more when it’s cooler. Only this year I’m just three weeks out from a half marathon, so I considered Sunday’s race a supported long run.

  • Monday: It was a long day with working on the parents’ home, spending time with the parents, and driving back home
  • Tuesday: Dogwalk, 3 miles with 4 x 400/400 intervals
  • Wednesday: 5 min bike WU, Purely Twins Weights#33, Dogwalk
  • Thursday:  Dogwalk, 3 miles easy (2 with Bandit), 4 strides post run
  • Friday: Dogwalk, 3 easy treadmill miles
  • Saturday: Almost 10k steps with no formal exercise
  • Sunday: Stockadeathon 15k (but ran a bit long)

I headed out and warmed up with Bandit in the neighborhood for a mile, then dropped him off at the house and run 400m fast, 400m recovery 4 times. I was shooting for about a 10 minute pace during the fast portion, because someday I’d like to run a 5k at that pace.

I never quite made it, but my last interval was the fastest and at least approached it at 10:16 so I was happy with this run.

Thursday


Set out for an easy run with Bandit and took him along for 2 miles this time. It’s not like this saves me anytime at all, in fact, I’m probably slower with him along, but he seems to enjoy it. I think. He actually doesn’t stop to pee anywhere near as often as he does when we walk!

I dropped him off at the house and ran one more mile than did 4 strides since I had a 15k race coming up on Sunday.

I do love the light on the leaves in the late afternoon. The hard part is getting out the door when it’s chillier!

Friday


It was a cloudy, chilly day and I just decided to run on the treadmill to make life simpler. No worrying about Bandit, no runcrastination getting out the door, and I always figure it’s kinder to my legs.

I increased my run pace from 4.7 to 4.8 mph (approximately 12:30mm), which combined with my walk breaks took me to a 13mm pace.

Nothing notable about this run.

My second time at the Stockadeathon. I had a plan for this race. Did I follow it? Guess you’ll have to wait for the recap. Which probably won’t be for a couple of weeks. Sorry!

Favorites of the week
Perfect running weather, with the exception of Friday. At least the days I ran. We did have one very nasty, cold, rainy day but luckily I didn’t have to run that day. I’ve had my share of nasty, cold, rainy runs.

Love the light on the leaves

Loving the light on the remaining leaves in the afternoons.

A little retail therapy at TJMaxx (no photos — but I think I found what I’m going to wear on Thanksgiving).

I also bought Bandit some sweaters and jackets at TJMaxx, and while I was out running my race, Mr. Judy chatted with one of our neighbors, who lost their dog a few years back — they gifted us with Dakota’s jackets and sweaters. Thank you, Dakota’s mom & dad! Also no photos . . . yet.

  1. A good week. Those muffins look yummy. I am baking a birthday cake for thanksgiving. No races for me. Yes, we still have leaves on the trees but there are at least as many on the ground.

  2. OK, since I don’t do this — I’ve got to ask. Why do you catalogue the items you donate? Just curious. That tree is beautiful in the fall light. I didn’t do any cross training this week! I just ran out of time and needed to rest more. How fun to get some donated items for Bandit to wear! Be sure to post some pictures. How wonderful you are able to run with him. I miss running with my Mini. The pumpkin corn muffins look delicious. Thanks for linking, Judy!

    1. If you’re going to use it as a tax write off; that’s why I catalog it.

      I don’t know how long Bandit will be able to run with me; he’s 8. Although he’s got a lot of JRT (jack russell terrier) in him so who knows.

      It’s easier to run on my own, it doesn’t save me any time at all (probably takes longer), but he seems to enjoy it. The things we do for our furkids!

  3. Household chores can be so exhausting – but it does feel good to get them done. I like white race shirts for my o’dark-thirty runs (better visibility). Those pumpkin corn bread muffins look great – I may try them myself.

    1. Both Bandit and Lola don’t have a whole lot of fat on them. Lola has plenty of fur, but she’s so lean she does feel the cold. And Bandit is our first short haired dog.

      He’s mostly JRT, we think, and we recently read something about how they do get pretty cold.

      Lola HATES her coats, but if we’re going to walk in the 20s, she needs them. Bandit seems pretty cool with it but I haven’t had to walk him with a coat yet. Hence buying some!

  4. I have not seen many of the beautiful colors on the trees while running because I’ve done so many early runs in the dark. The sunlight shining through the leaves, and the stark contrast of the dark branches (or white of birch trees) is so beautiful. I’ve had awesome running weather, too.

    1. I didn’t recently run a marathon. 🙂 Definitely makes it easier.

      Although I’m racing quite a bit this month (that’s the plan, anyway).

      Plus there’s a difference between planning your meal and actually making everything! Plus the cleaning! Oy!

  5. Pumpkin corn muffins, those sound amazing. And absolutely insane that Thanksgiving is next week already. The time has been flying. I am also enjoying the fall colors when I’m out mountain biking, although I agree that between the loss of daylight and cooler temps it is more challenging to get moving.

  6. Still looks like a great week 🙂 I am making a sweet potato dish for Thanksgiving that is really more like a dessert than a side dish. Your picture with the fall leaves is so pretty! The leaves blew off all my trees weeks ago 😦

  7. I wear white a lot for visibility. Unfortunately my race ones are too big (still wear them, though).

    I see we have another skirt in common (It’s not my favorite – it’s kinda long – both the skirt & the tights).

    Don’t know what I am doing for Thanksgiving. Can I come over? (Only kidding). I love to cook. It’s my favorite holiday but this year I don’t have Wed off and my MIL wants to order out.

    1. Yeah, I’m not super thrilled with it either. I don’t mind the skirt being long — it was supposed to be — or even the legs — but the inseam is just wrong on me. And here I was thinking you might want it. 🙂 Maybe I need to try shrinking it in the wash?

      We did take out one year at my sister’s; which is fine by me, it’s not really my favorite holiday and turkey is not my thing. But the rest of the family is happier with turkey.

      Although right now nothing will make my mom happy. And I was so hoping 2017 would be better, and hopefully it will, but probably not in that department.

      1. I tried shrinking it. I always put my clothes in the dryer. Nothing ever happens turkey is not my fave but pumpkin soup and sweet potatoes and squash are.

  8. Despite being tired you still had a great week Judy! 10 K steps on Saturday is great! I actually really like the race shirt – it looks great! The pumpkin muffins looks delicious and I really love of the nutritious goodness in your salad for Thanksgiving! Is it Kale? I wished I had some of these beautiful fall temperatures here in Florida for my running – love the colors of the leaves!

    1. Yes, it’s a massaged kale salad and it was really good. 🙂 All sorts of other goodies in it too.

      The fall temps are nice for running, but I much preferred this time of year when I lived in TX & the average high was 60! We’re pretty lucky to get up to 40 or 50 this time of year.

      Which is certainly better than the winter . . .

    1. I won’t know what I’m packing until it’s a lot closer, we’re leaving a week after Thanksgiving. I know most likely it will be warm, but you never know — there are cold snaps down south too. Right now it’s barely on my radar.

      My guess is I’ll be wearing a skirt & a tank for the race.

      1. I am sorry about that fender bender — it seems to go with the territory with teenagers.

        I did have one accident at that age, but it wasn’t my fault. In fact, I’ve been lucky — I’ve only been in one other accident, although I did scratch up my car on someone else’s in Trader Joe’s parking lot once. My peripheral vision is really poor. And my car is really old, so it doesn’t really matter!

  9. I like that some big stressors have calmed a little for you I hope?! It seems like you have things in a quieter routine again 🙂 which I hope feels good.
    You all look great for you 15K. The course looked beautiful from what I saw on Darlene’s recap. I hope I get to do a 15K this year …I am still on the fence about races and I feel doing them now but I am looking forward to Dec.
    I don’t know what we are doing for Thanksgiving yet! I think my hubby is working.

    1. Well, some things have calmed down, others are continuing stress (my parents are still very unhappy and that is extremely stressful, trying to figure out how to keep them there, which we all believe to be the best place, but make them happier with it).

      Aww, I have spent a lot of holidays by myself — my husband used to travel for work — and it can really suck. Although sometimes it can be nice, too, if you change your mindset about it!

  10. November is just crazy for races and things going on!

    We are hosting Thanksgiving. My mom is coming over on Thursday to discuss the final menu. I know that Mr PugRunner is making a bacon-wrapped turkey on the Big Green Egg, in addition to the regular turkey. I guess we’ll see how the rest shakes out. We have some picky eaters at our table, some traditional favorites that we can’t give up, and then just lots of stuff we would love to try.

    1. I did a bacon wrapped breast last year, and some legs, but not a whole turkey. And I enjoyed it so much I’m doing it again this year. 🙂

      We don’t really have picky eaters. A bit judgmental if it’s not loaded with sugar & fat, but oh well, that’s why I sort of like doing it. Otherwise I HAVE to make something to have something healthy to eat!
