I runfess . . .
Another new year, another new pain.They always come out of the blue. And I have some angry tendons, lemme tell you. You name the body part, I’ve probably had tendinitis there.

This time it’s on the side of my foot. It’s a lot like PF — hurts worse in the morning, but I was pretty sure that wasn’t it because it’s not the bottom of my foot. And my chiropractor agreed — but she also said I’m okay to run and train, thankfully.

By the time you read this, it’s actually feeling a lot better, but still not normal. I’m sure just like my ankle last year, it will take its own sweet time healing.

Oh, and before you blame Rachel @ Runningonhappy, who’s coaching me, this started before I started working with her. During my off season. Seriously! Who does that happen to? Me, apparently.

I hate the fact that pains can spring up out of nowhere. Until last year I’d never had any ankle problems, until this year I’d never had any feet problems.

On my birthday, suddenly I had a kink in my shoulder. I wasn’t even doing anything! I swear, I was just innocently standing there, not even moving, and suddenly there was this kink.

This just drives me insane! Am I active? Yes. Do I try to be cautious? Yes. Do I try to do the things that should keep my body happy? Yes.

The kink went away after my infrared wrap. Then the other night I felt a pain on the back of my ankle — no, not achilles tendinitis — it felt as though Mr. Judy had scratched me in my sleep.

I tried to look at it the next morning cause it was actually rather painful. It wasn’t a scratch; I’m actually not quite sure what it is. Sort of like a blister but not quite. I try not to complain too much, but don’t I have enough going on already?

That I know you southern runners have to endure the heat in the summer . . . but seriously. Sometimes it feels like we’re in our own little snowglobe up here — when even the midwest is warm and snow-free and we’re anything but!

I know that isn’t true, but it feels like it’s true. And sometimes I think southern runners should have to endure a northern winter, just once. It builds character, right?

That I have yet another parking rant for you. And it’s even related to running, sort of.

I don’t know why there are so many people who have to park their cars on the street. When we have a snowstorm, they don’t move their cars (not even the sheriff next door). So the snowplow has to plow around them.

So there’s chunks of snow in the middle of the street, it makes walking the dogs difficult, it makes ice from melting snow appear just waiting to take me down.

I miss my little 3 mile runs. Don’t get me wrong, I am working towards a goal and I’m willing to work hard for it.

I always feel this way though: as the weekday runs get longer and the miles grow, I miss those little runs in base training.

  1. I’m not sure I would call Virginia the south, but either way we are having unseasonably warm weather as well here and I’ll take it! I hate the snow. We had one big snow storm and I hope we are one and done. Roads were a mess down here for days afterwards because it doesn’t normally snow and we do not have the proper plows and such to remove it like the Northeast does quickly.

    1. VA is most definitely south. Take it from a Yankee. Sometimes you guys get more snow than we do — not this year!

      We didn’t get nearly as much warm days as most of the country, but it was still a nice respite. Long run sunday is forecast a high of 39 and windy.

      I know about snow removal (and driving) in the south — having lived in MD & TX.

    1. Last night it was suddenly my neck — and it’s still stiff this morning. Not something that normally happens to me either. Geez!

  2. I’ve had that side-of-the-foot pain. According to my chiro, it’s quite common among runners. Mine vanished as quickly as it came on. Sorry you seem to be exempt from all the mild weather this year. If it makes you feel any better we’ve got vicious t’storms today and it’s all going to freeze. Thanks for linking!

    1. Mine did not vanish as quickly as it came on — but it’s slowly getting better. Last night I thought I felt a twinge on the OTHER foot in the same area. REALLY? And now my neck is stiff.

      All that foam rolling, yoga, stretching. Sigh.

      My chiro pointed out that it’s a common area for stress fractures in runners. Which of course was my first thought, despite the fact that when it happened, I wasn’t even training hard.

      Thankfully, since it doesn’t hurt when I run & is getting better, pretty darn sure that’s not it.

      Someday maybe I’ll visit a podiatrist . . . but I’m not running in orthotics.

    1. Take mine, please. I never, ever missed winter in TX. EVER!!!!!!

      In case you didn’t get my drift, I loathe cold weather and snow. I don’t miss having seasons, either. Although I wasn’t real fond of the heat in summer.

  3. Our spring reprieve has ended…rain yesterday with the threat of snow today. UGH. As much as I enjoyed the warm stuff, I knew it would not usher us into an early summer. I hope your foot feels better! Those phantom aches & pains are frustrating!

    1. Oh, it’s not phantom at all. Luckily it also doesn’t hurt while running — often it feels a whole lot better after running, as a matter of fact.

      It does feel better, but I’d like it to be gone already.

      We didn’t have anywhere near as many warm days as you guys did. Plus 2 big snowstorms not that long ago & the snow hasn’t even completely melted yet (but probably will over the next couple of days — although not on the paths, most likely).

      Sunday is forecast to be windy & a high of 39. Still, it doesn’t look like we’re completely going back into the deep freeze.

  4. Random pains are SO annoying to me. It’s like “I didn’t even do anything to warrant this new issue” LOL

    Here in CT we haven’t gotten that much snow but we’ve had some pretty cold days. The current weather is very springlike!

    1. Absolutely — I truly don’t believe I did anything wrong, but clearly my body has other ideas.

      We’ve had it all: warm days, cold days, wind, ice, snow. What we had very little of, until recently — was sun!

  5. Just wait until you’re as old as me. Only kidding. No aches or pains … knock on wood.

    NO FOMO here about having a coach. I love running whatever I want – 2 miles, 3 miles, 4 miles. I’m a coach’s nightmare.

    I hope you do get a PR or at least get faster. But I do see that it depends on the race. Those with a coach may get a pR and then the next race they are as slow or slower than before – due to may outside factors.

    I wish we could have yesterday’s weather everyday. Now today we have rain:(

    1. I didn’t actually say anything about a PR. πŸ™‚ It would be nice, but like FL, I’m not actually holding my breath. But if I don’t work hard, it won’t ever happen.

      You should be lucky with tomorrow’s run — it doesn’t look like the rain will start til much later in the day. I suppose I could’ve run 10 miles & then gone down, but I know right now that’s just not a good idea for me.

      I won’t like Sunday’s weather but I’ll get it done. I’m thinking of skipping the winter series and just going on my own later in the day — which also gives me some time to relax a bit in the morning. I’m tired. It’s been a long few weeks.

      1. I’m thinking of running the 4.5 just for fun since it’s the last one. 10 am is late for a race and later than I’ll have to get up tomorrow. Maybe it seems late since I’ve been at work at 7am most of the week.

      2. Yeah, remember I’m spending 3 hrs in a car tomorrow & then working decluttering. Main reason I’m thinking later on Sunday is that it’ll be a little warmer & lets me relax in the morning.

  6. I like those little 3 mile runs, they are a little sweet spot in the training cycle for sure! Aches and pains, I guess it is all part of the journey. Just a quick reminder that we are still alive!!! I hope you have a pain free weekend and a little sun πŸ™‚

  7. I hate when people park on the streets before it snows. Move your dang car! I know when I worked in Boston, they would ban parking on major roads when a blizzard was coming. I wouldn’t park my car because I would not want to risk it being scratched or crunched by a plow.

  8. I think I did my time with many harsh Kansas winters before moving to TX … I’m enjoying not having snow or the brutal cold. I’ve been getting a weird pain on the side of my ankle when I wake up in the morning… but once I start moving around it goes away, then I forget about it until the next morning…. weird.

  9. I used to hate it when cars parked on the sides of the road in Indiana. The plow wouldn’t get to do a particularly good job and my car, with front wheel drive, would be plowing through snow and slipping all over the road. It drove me nuts!

    Kansas winters have treated me pretty well. This year we basically skipped the whole snow thing and we hit the 80’s this week. I imagine that SLC isn’t going to treat me so well. They have some pretty bad conditions right now and I bet I’m going to be angrily yelling at cars that park on the roads again. lol

    1. I do say that a lot about the summer — but c’mon — frigging Chicago gets no snow while we get slammed? There’s something wrong with that picture!

      No snow here in the forseeable future, thank goodness, although cold temps are returning. That’s ok — although no doubt I’ll whine about them — but we got a break & it even got over 70 today!

      I shouldn’t say that, right? It’s insensitive to you. πŸ™‚

  10. Aches & pains sure make running a bit more of a challenge. Be grateful it was not a stress fracture. I love my easy runs too. I did some of that MAF running & I think it helped me improve actually. Last Sunday it was 58 here in Wisconsin & today we are in the middle of a dang snow storm. Getting too lose to the foot mark for my liking. I am with you on wanting to see spring!

  11. Judy I can totally relate on the aches and pains… I am so so sick of there always being an issue… if it’s not my foot (it’s not anymore, that’s apparently old news), it’s my back and if it’s not my back it’s my knees. hello, can I just have ONE training year without something going wrong???

  12. I’m glad I didn’t cause your aches and pains. Phew! πŸ˜…

    I get all sorts of weird aches and niggles. If it’s a discernable pain I wouldn’t run on it but if it’s just an ache it’s probably ok.

    I miss 3 mile runs, too. Then again, we’re both in training so… we got this! πŸ’ͺπŸ˜‰
