At the movies: 5/1-7 Weekly Wrap

I was up to running this week, unlike after my NOLA half — still really tired. Not sure why. Travel? Lack of sun? I also suffered a complete lack of motivation for any sort of strength training, and that definitely needs to change next week.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin; if our hosts don’t inspire you to get more active, I don’t know what will!

Running updates

Matching the flowers (unintended)

Wednesday

I was tired; I won’t lie. The day before had been a very long day of travel, leaving my MIL’s house at 7 am-ish and arriving back home at 10 pm-ish (remember there’s a 3 hour time difference). Gizmo, of course, does not understand that I have just traveled 12 hours the day before, or that I recently ran a half . . . all he knows is that he wants his breakfast.

So I runcrastinated in the morning, with the payoff being that the rain had ended by the time I got out to run. I considered running to the grocery store, but I was a little time crunched what with having to go pick up Bandit, too, so I ran around the neighborhood instead (luckily for me, the pet sitter was sitting at the vet with her dog and I could leave later, although I didn’t know that when I set out).

This run was a struggle, and it wasn’t easy either. But it was negative splits — yeah, I pushed just a little that last mile to make that happen. Not that it was at all speedy.

Trying to brighten up our day

Friday

In retrospect, I’m glad I stuck to the treadmill for this run. Running in a pouring cold rain once this week was enough for me. Thursday was really nice, but I knew I needed another rest day, and I still don’t regret taking it.

Before the rain REALLY started

Sunday

This long run was pretty good, even if the weather pretty much sucked. Didn’t I get enough cold rain last week? Apparently not, because it really poured on me for a few miles (but a few were dry, too).

The nice thing about this run was that at mile 8, where typically I’m slowing down, I felt pretty strong and the last two miles were my fastest. Not my fastest long run, but I enjoyed running on mostly flat path.

Favorites of the week
Between movies on our flights, going to a movie, and watching one on Amazon Prime, I’ve caught up with a few movies I wanted to see:

  • Collateral Beauty (really enjoyed it)
  • Jackie (rather strange, actually, I thought)
  • LaLa Land (also strange, not a fan & glad I didn’t bother with it in the theaters — can’t believe it won Best Picture over Hidden Figures)
  • The Zookeeper’s Wife (one of the few that I think was better than the book)
  • Manchester by the Sea (another slow, strange, rather pointless movie, I thought, and am still scratching my head at Casey Affleck’s Oscar, too)
  • I forgot Gifted! We saw this in WA & I recommend it (even if it reminds me of several movies)

Although I’d like to continue to run on trails sometimes, it won’t be in the cards next week most likely. I’d also really like to go swimming, but I probably won’t be able to squeeze that in next week either. Hopefully by the time I can it will be nicer weather. But it was nice to run on pavement more this week and see that my pace hasn’t suffered.

Recovery salmon (and avocado)

Sushi post LSD; sushi is always good. Not a whole lot going on this week.

And that’s a wrap

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Treadmill or cold rain run?

Most recent movie you enjoyed?

What are you looking forward to this week?

  1. I agree with you about Manchester By the Sea. I wasn’t wowed by it. But it’s free on Amazon Prime now, so I’m going to rewatch it and see if I change my mind.

I watched a movie on Netflix that didn’t get great reviews but I liked it–Bill Murray is in it. It’s called Rock the Casbah.

  2. I watched Manchester By The Sea on the plane. It was interesting enough. You know I wasn’t impressed by La La Land. I’ll have to check out Collateral Beauty.

    1. I kept thinking it wasn’t La La Land, forgot that whole little snafu. I still don’t think it deserved the accolades it got (I know you didn’t either). Glad I didn’t pay to see it.

Moonlight was an option on the plane, but I wanted to try to see a couple of movies so went for the shorter ones.

  3. I’ve not seen any of those movies. I think I’m still catching up on those that came out 4 or 5 years ago, lol. I’ll definitely take the treadmill over the driving rain. Light rain, I can sorta handle, but not a huge downpour. Although, I have to say, my first 10K race it poured the whole time. I wore a garbage bag to stay somewhat dry and warm. PITA. 😉

    1. I’ve actually been lucky (maybe) with races. Not too many rainy ones — even though it rained a lot this lost one, it still didn’t rain the entire time.

Now, heat, that’s a different story. I’m pretty sure I actually prefer cool & rainy . . . although just cool is better. 🙂

  4. I also got to see Manchester by the Sea on a plane. I don’t watch too many movies on planes but for some reason, I was drawn to this one. I loved it. I bawled my eyes out. I keep telling everyone to watch it.

  5. That sushi looks so good! I may have to get that this week now! I was wondering how LaLa Land was. I like both those actors in it. I have heard different sides. Some said it was good but others said it was a snooze fest. I may just have to check it out for myself!

  6. I find it so hard to have good training runs after long, long days and/or traveling. good that you still did what you could do!

I haven’t seen any of those movies. in fact, I have no time for movies right now! between work, school and running/ training, there is just no time. that said though, I have been to the cinema more this year than the past few years! so it’s improving 🙂

    1. If I’d really felt bad, like after NOLA, I wouldn’t have run (like after NOLA). I do try to listen to my body!

This was the first time I’d been to the movies in 6 months. 😦 I’m making up for lost time!

  7. I don’t watch many Oscar movies, but my mom and I made sure to see Hidden Figures. We both loved it! The only other movie I’ve seen in the theater was the Boston Marathon documentary. I do want to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

    1. Mr. Judy would like to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (we only saw the first one recently — really haven’t been able to go to the movies much this past year).

I do like to see Oscar nominated movies.

  8. I agree with you regarding the Jackie movie ….and I’m a huge Jacqueline fan! But the movie was odd. I’ve read many many books about her and I think she was a very strong and independent woman. While she may have been “hardened” somewhat from living a public life, I don’t think she was as cold as the movie portrayed her. Just my opinion. 🙂

  9. I watched the first half of Manchester By The sea on my way to Door County and planned to watch the rest on my way home. But as luck would have it, I was on an older plane without headrest players. Shhh…don’t tell me what happens. Thanks for linking, Judy!

  10. I haven’t seen any of the movies you mentioned. I did hear about the Zookeeper’s wife from another friend so I think I’ll add it to my radar!
The sushi looks really good! I get a roll that has salmon, cream cheese and avocado in it. In fact, I’m craving it now! Lunch maybe??
Thanks for joining us in the weekly wrap!

  11. Nice job this past week! Cold, rainy weather is the worst…I think we’re finally getting some decent sunshine today but it’s still cooler than I like!

I’m going to have to trust your movie reviews – I didn’t see La La Land but some of the negative reviews got to me first!

    1. I didn’t see LaLa Land in the theaters, either, for the same reason.

We get so many cold Mays . . . I sort of accept it. Except the forecast for this weekend is downright ugly. 😦

  12. I saw La La Land and thought it was strange too. I couldn’t believe it won all those Oscars. I guess I’m used to the cold rain and would rather run outside than on the treadmill. The last movie I saw was Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and thought it was funny.

    1. There’s cold and then there’s cold. You guys don’t get quite as cold as we do! Thankfully I haven’t had to resort to the treadmill in a while. If I run on Thursday, though, I probably will, as it’s forecast to be in the low 90s and I can’t run early in the day.

We haven’t seen GG2 yet. We just recently watched the first one!
