When is enough enough?: Runfessions September 2017

bsept2017runfess

It’s never enough, right? Never enough time, never fast enough, never enough states, never enough races. It seems that way, but it really isn’t. If you listen carefully to your body and your heart and the significant others in your life, you’ll know why you’re biting off more than you can chew.

You may not like it, but I like to say that things have a way of working out. And they do. It doesn’t seem that way when we’re in the throws of something that seems bad, and yet in hindsight, we often find that that bad thing may actually have turned out to be a good thing.

I runfess . . .
Despite knowing that it’s been a long time of fairly non-stop training, I began to think about a November/December half. I mean, why not, right?

But then I whacked myself upside the head because I knew that I’m tired, my body’s tired, and it’s time for a break. Not that I don’t have some shorter races that I hope to do.

I runfess . . .
That using a race as a training or recovery run just isn’t easy for me. I may be slow (hey, I read a blog post this morning talking about being “BOTP” and their time was faster than my PR) but I do like to race.

So there I was last week: a tempo run, speedwork, a long run and a 5k the day afterwards.

I runfess I was almost glad that it was definitely too hot to really race.

I runfess . . .
I kept trying to figure out how to get one last swim in before my race. I haven’t been able to swim much, due to the pool being closed, and I know that when it gets really cold I won’t want to.

But the weeks were filled with the usual, plus an eye doctor appointment, that long run + race (see above), a cooking class (at least something fun!), a chiropractor appointment, and taking Lola to the vet at night for a consultation for a dental — a vet that’s almost 30 minutes away. And, of course, a little matter of packing for my race.

I sadly let my swim go.

I runfess . . .
. . . that when I realized I’d brought 2 left shoes to my parents’ apartment, I was not happy. I actually tried one of them on my right foot. It was quickly obvious that wouldn’t work; I wasn’t that desperate! But hey, I saw someone running barefoot in my 5k last Sunday. And almost a mile of that race is on a trail!

I runfess . . .
. . . that for about the last 2 years, I’ve had my halfs all lined up, one right after the other. Boom, boom, boom. Until now. I have no halfs scheduled for 2018. I have some thoughts, but so far, there’s nothing that’s called to me so strongly that I felt I needed to sign up right now.

But stay tuned. There just might be something a little different in 2018. And no, it’s not a marathon! Or at least, as of this moment, I am not signed up for a marathon and do not plan to sign up for one, either.

Any guesses to what I may be thinking of for 2018?

Ever had a shoe catastrophe (remember the trail shoe that came apart in my race)?

  1. You are hilarious for trying on the left shoe! I’ve got nothing on tap for 2018…yet….lots depends on if I make it through the London lottery. Slim to no chance but still a chance. You need to do a tri!

    1. Desperate times . . . obviously I wasn’t that desperate. My husband suggested I try my walking around sneakers — no thanks!

      Good luck with London.

I don’t bike. I have no intention of getting on a bike. So no tris for me. Plus — the training takes up way too much time!

  2. I would probably have gone for a run barefoot or in socks, but I’ve run barefoot before and my body would be ok with it. I don’t think I have anything on the calendar for 2018, but I’m notorious for forgetting what I’ve signed up for…

  3. I runfess that I’m looking forward to a break form training in November/December. Like you, I’ll do some 5ks (probably a turkey trot, etc), but my body is screaming for a break!

I’m guessing a trail race for 2018? I have two half marathons scheduled for 2018 so far. I’m hoping to hit up some more states next year.

  4. I luckily have never had a running shoe catastrophe but there was one day that I left early to go to the gym and had planned to shower there before work. I had packed my boots at the last minute and when I went to put them on, I discovered I had two different boots! I was lucky enough to get one left and one right but they were not a matched set. LOL I was also lucky enough that my husband had not left for work so I called him, he grabbed the matching boots and I met him at his office. Thank goodness he hadn’t left yet because I totally HATE being late to work! haha

Hmm…2018….are you going to do one of those Tough Mudders or something?! I have 3 races on my schedule for 2018. Of course, can’t register for any of them yet but they’re there and I’m committed to them!

  5. I have remembered my shoes but forgot socks lol and I can’t go barefoot in shoes even lol
I have no idea what 2018 will hold for you…maybe more local races.
I love using a half as a training run, it takes the pressure off and I usually enjoy them even more. I guess that is actually the same as running one for fun LOL

  6. I’ll runfess I have no idea if I want to do a race next spring. I know what I’d like to sign up for next fall, but the spring is wide open. Even when I haven’t signed up for races yet, I know which ones I want to do. Not having a spring race in mind is strange.

  7. ….are you considering a tri? I have one race for sure lined up for 2018…Chicago R’n’R (because I totally had to DNS it this year with it happening two weeks after my surgery LOL), but I do have my sights on several races I usually do…the registrations have not yet opened.

  8. I have not thought of 2018 at all yet. I still have 3 more races in 2017. Then I will see if I am all raced out. I like the variety so rarely do the same race twice. So I guess I will need to keep my ears open for something new next year.

  9. Ummmm, maybe a trail race or a triathlon???

No shoe catastrophe for me!! At least not yet!!

I’m looking forward to 2018 since I’m not running the rest of 2017. Run with Donna is the first on that is on the schedule, but depending on recovery I may be in for Louisiana??!!
