Hey, I got a few miles in!: 2/19- 25 Weekly Wrap

I am still slowly returning to activity, getting back into the house cleaning groove (as much as I ever am), and resting a lot. The Olympics came along at a good time.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to actually share a few miles this week.

Wednesday
When I saw it was supposed to be 70 on Wednesday, despite the rainy forecast, I knew that had to be my first run back. Thankfully my body cooperated and while I still wouldn’t say I was 100%, this run, although short, gave me more energy — which is normally the case of a run, no matter how tired I go into it. And despite all the rest, I was a bit tired going into it.

It was slow, but really not terrible considering it was the first time I’d run in about 2 1/2 weeks. Especially considering it has been months since I’ve been able to run in such warm temps (which also tend to slow me down, especially as I ended up running midday, which I normally try to avoid).

I’m going to take it nice and easy for a little while. Still no reason to push it.

And just like that, by Saturday the snow had mostly melted again . . .

Saturday
The group got together at 8, but I just didn’t want to get out that early. And knowing myself, I was sure I’d run too fast in a group. So I ran by myself a little later in the morning, and actually enjoyed the brief sunshine of the day (along with the wind).

This run felt harder than Wednesday, and it was slower, but it wasn’t bad. I’m keeping it easy right now and taking a couple of days rest after a run . . . until I feel back to normal. Happy to be moving again!

Favorites of the week
Can we talk weather? It snowed. It rained. It sleeted. It got up to almost a record high on Wednesday, and all the snow melted. Then it snowed some more. Then rained some more.

But I’m not complaining, because that 73 high on Wednesday was a rare February treat (although we set the record of 74 last February). Although I will admit that I am tired of the gray. And feeling cold. To everything there is a season, right?

Mostly I was just happy to be fever-free this week and getting back to more activity. Not even a whole lot of DOMs going on, for which I am very thankful. Otherwise not a whole lot going on.

I’m wrapping it up with a few favorite blogs from this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Have you been surprised by not feeling sore after time off for activity for whatever reason?

Are you gearing up for a race or still in an off season?

Do you make a big deal out of big birthdays (mine wasn’t a big one, but my mom’s 90th is just a couple of weeks away)?

  1. Have you been surprised by not feeling sore after time off for activity for whatever reason? No. Typically I ache when I don’t move. Of course bad joints don’t help. But my Dad had RA & even he said without exercise os some sort he would stiffen up terrible. I guess I experience the same thing.

Are you gearing up for a race or still in an off season? I started my training for my first 1/2 today.

    1. It’s pretty rare for me to take so much time off activity, but I know when I need it. And I am definitely sloooooowly easing back into activity — but I am pleased to see that I seem to have some muscle memory.

I hope you have a great training cycle for your half!

  2. Glad you got yourself back on the road. I bet it felt good!

We do get the craziest weather this time of year. There’s a saying here that if you don’t like the weather, wait because it will change.

    1. It felt good on Wed when the weather was so nice. 🙂

I’ve lived in 4 different states — NE, mid Atlantic, and TX — guess what they say in every single one of them? 😉 Seriously, though, this week was one of the most bizarre ones weather-wise.

Everywhere I’ve lived we’ve seen those drop 30 degrees overnight days (this time it was 40), but the back & forth from snow to rain to snow to rain . . .

  3. It sounds like you picked the perfect day to get back to running. I’m glad you’ve also gotten a little taste of spring. I think we set a record with 84 this week, without the sun. It’s been gloomy and that affects me more (at least mentally) than temps. I’m looking forward to a little sunny cool snap later in the week. Thanks for linking!

    1. Oh, I picked that day on purpose. 🙂

Gloom AND the temps effect me! And we don’t get a lot of sun up here. I swear, every year we live here I feel more & more tired. But we also don’t want to return to TX. It’s gonna be tough to decide where to retire to.

  4. Hooray for running a few miles!!! I’m in love with that jette skirt. That’s the one I have!! Just ordered another in a different print. So excited for it to come in!

I’ve got two races coming up – one in a month, the other in 6 weeks. And then, nothing until October and the 50k! Although, I was just working it out with my husband that we’re going to hike and camp along that course in July to check it out and see what’s what. I don’t know what I’m more excited for! lol

I don’t generally make a big deal out of birthdays but 90 is a pretty big deal. I made my grandmother whatever she wanted for her 90th (which included Brussels sprouts back when I disliked them. that’s love right there. haha!) and I made her a big chocolate cake (she loved chocolate cake!). That said, it wasn’t a party. I flew up and it was me, mom, dad, and grandma for dinner. Low key. She wasn’t a big fan of a big to-do either. But, I made it fancy-ish. And she let me. I miss her. What does your mom want? Do you want me to drive up and bake a cake for her? haha 😉

    1. Well, if I lived in the south I probably wouldn’t be racing in the summer, either.

We’re trying to work out what my mom wants. She’s not one to call attention to herself. My dad is a different story, It’ll be my sister & her family, my brother & his family, & us. There are cousins, but none that live close anymore.

  5. 90 is a big deal. Hope you plan something fun.

I don’t make a big deal of my own birthday. I didn’t do anything special for 60. Won’t for 70.

Glad you are back to running.

This has not been a good winter to train for a big race.

    1. It hasn’t been a great winter to train, but hasn’t actually been horrible, either. The snow keeps melting. I’m praying there are no big storms waiting, but you never now. Doesn’t matter because I wasn’t training.

We’ll take my parents out to dinner; still working that out. That’s actually not til the end of next month, but Mr. Judy & I will also take them out on her actual birthday, which thankfully falls on a weekend — if the weather cooperates.

      1. No different from most years, though. Either you loop a lot, run in streets, or you run in UAlbany if you sign up for a Spring Half — unless, of course, you run on a treadmill.

At least you do have an option that doesn’t involve the treadmill.

      2. I have amnesia I guess and I always sign up for a spring half and then whine about the weather. But this is the first year of traveling for work so that impacts my weekday runs.It is what it is.
At least no sickness here…knock on wood.

  6. Glad you are feeling up to running again!

Surprised by not feeling sore? Nope, always sore after time off. Probably because I try to jump back in doing a little too much!
