Wrapping up 2018: 12/14-30 Weekly Wrap

Training Week 4: Best Damn Race Savannah Half

I’m beginning to add in some speed work, but am being somewhat conservative in my training. In fact, I’ll probably continue to go back and forth between three days a week and four days a week.  Mostly it will depend on the weather and how my body feels. I’ve also finally began to add in a little weight training too. I love Pilates & Yoga and think both are really beneficial for runners, but I do think lifting is important, too — just how to fit it all in?!

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home and sharing my last week of training in 2018 — I’ll share my wrap up of 2018 on Tuesday.

Running Updates

Monday
Snow again in the morning. Nothing much to write home about, but when I saw a truck sliding around the neighborhood, I knew I’d be better off on the mill. Again. It did melt later on, but I had to get my run in in the morning.

Increased the time of my speed interval, decreased the pace just a bit, and it went well.

It snows, it melts — which mostly works for me

Thursday
There was lovely sunshine in the morning, but by the time I was able to run in the afternoon, it had turned cloudy and raw and I chose the wrong jacket. OTOH, it was a strong run and one of my fastest 10 mile training runs.

Had I known the predicted rain on Friday would fizzle pretty early on, I would have run on Friday, but maybe it was a good thing, as my knee had this really weird ache afterwards. Felt fine while walking but every time I had to lift it it hurt. No cyst and definitely not runner’s knees or IT problems. Just weird.

My kingdom for some sun!

Saturday
It may have been warm for December in upstate NY, but that wasn’t exactly warm. Since I’d already done my long run I started after the group did, as I only wanted to run 6 miles. The knee was back to normal — the only thing I can think of is that my compression socks, which I always wear when it’s cold, somehow caused some muscle ache.

I totally meant to add in some strides at the end of this run and I totally forgot about them. Oh well.

Not the jackets again!

Favorites of the week
Mostly feeling good (had a weird day Friday but was fine by Saturday), strong running, little to no snow — life is mostly good.

Saw two good movies this weekend. One on Amazon, which we missed in the theaters, “Wonder”, which we both enjoyed and wasn’t quite what I’d expected. And we went to see “Green Book” today which I highly recommend if you’re in the mood to laugh and be moved.

Just Lola 🙂

Let’s get the conversation started:

Happy New Years! Any NY races? I do one on NYD. Pretty sure it won’t be canceled this year like last year was due to cold — and that’s not a bad thing!

Are you busy signing up for 2019 races? I am wide open, mostly

Quiet night in (yes) or party animal?

  1. No NYD race for me but I’ll probably run a few miles, just because…

I’ve kind of given up on speedwork. Doing the run-walk intervals feels like speedwork every time I run!

    Happy New Year!

  2. I like to use races as speedwork.

Definitely not a home body but maybe more now that I started knitting again. I’m not a party animal but I do like to go out with friends to movies and restaurants.

I think it will be skirt weather on Tues Woo Hoo. Definitely better weather than last year’s re-scheduled race.

Glad the knee is back to normal.

    1. It won’t be skirt weather for me. It’s going to be very windy, so it will feel colder than the actual temp. Or at least that’s what they’re saying. Even if it weren’t, it still wouldn’t be skirt weather for me!

  3. No NYD race, but a group of us usually gather at the lake. It’s a 1-mile trail around the lake, so we can all run however “far” as we want and we’re all still together. But most of us just do three laps as a group. Then, there’s usually breakfast afterwards…or champagne 😉 Happy New Year!

  4. You managed a good week! I’ll be working a full day and staying home tomorrow. NYE is not my thing anymore. I am looking forward to nice weather (fingers crossed) for a bike ride on NYD.

    1. NYE was never really my thing. Not a party animal. Yesterday I was trying to remember what the heck I did on my first NYE after college . . . probably went up to visit Mr. Judy (we weren’t married yet), although I must admit I really don’t remember. And ever since then we have been married . . .

  5. Glad to hear Wonder is in Amazon. They may be one I check out. Thanks for sharing that info.

Hope your race goes well. As you may have guess by lack of blog posts, I’ve pretty much taken off from running through the holidays but hope to use New Years day as the day I return regularly again! -M

  6. I’m really hoping to get to parkrun tomorrow – I have an offer of a lift so I just have to sit in a car then run 3.1 miles then get in a car again. But I’m still coughing. I’m planning to meet up with some ladies only one of whom I know who have been encouraging each other to learn to run, and one of them says she’s really slow so hopefully that’s true and I can run/walk with her!

      1. In fact two of the ladies were pretty new runners and one had a bad cold and hadn’t been running long enough to be able to take that in her stride, so so speak, so I had a very gentle time and the longest it’s ever taken me to get round parkrun but it was wonderful! The lady with the cold was quite tearful at the end, so proud was she of her achievement, which was just lovely. So a good start and I survived!

      2. That’s awesome. I went to a run put on by our local running store yesterday, but I chose to walk it since I’d run earlier in the day. Luckily another woman I just met walked with me, too, because she had a headlamp & I didn’t & it was quite dark at the park (it was in the evening).

  7. I plan to keep with my exercise plan. I have a 3 mile run 🏃‍♀️ on the schedule. I always exercise regardless of the day. This year I plan to sign up for several races. Last year I did my first 1/2 marathon but it was the only race I did. I would like to get in another 1/2 since I did so poorly on my first. I have added strength training (Total Gym) & I think it’s helped my running.

    1. Well, your first was so hot, it’s hardly surprising that it wasn’t what you were hoping for.

Signing up for more races is a good idea — they can’t all be great, so having more to look forward to (or redeem yourself) is a good thing.

      Happy New Years, Paula!

  8. We typically go out for dinner on NYE but are home well before midnight. This year however we have freezing rain in progress and its forecast to continue so I suspect we’ll be staying home, which is just fine by me. Kudos to you for handling 10 miles so nicely so early in your training. I wish I could say the same. I’ve heard good things about Wonder.

  9. Yeah trying to fit it all in is a nutty challenge
Saturday was glorious in the NYC suburbs — wish I could have run Friday too, but it was a soaker and I needed the day off anyway
Glad your knees are settling – mine are too and even survived heels

  10. Great job on that 10 mile run! We have had so much rain lately, I can’t remember the last time it snowed, though the weather has dropped to freezing on a few days. I didn’t do a race on New Year’s Day but did make it out for a 3 mile run!

  11. Party animals that we are, we went out for dinner but were back home before 8 pm on NYE. I did cook the traditional NYD food for good luck. I haven’t been doing any speed work but do always pick it up a little during the last mile…cause it’s mostly downhill. LOL. Happy New Year and thanks for linking with us this year!
