Spring Cleaning: 4/15-21 WRD

A “big” jump in running for me (it’s all relative) and the first 4 x week in a while. I was so happy to be able to run in a tank and skirt finally; not so happy about the humidity.

Running Updates

Monday
Got in 2 speedy miles before mentoring for roughly 1.5 miles. Got rained on a bit before the mentoring, but it was fine, and stayed dry during the mentoring run.

Hill repeats (didn’t need the vest really — again!)

Tuesday
It may have been windy, but it was finally a pretty day to run. I chose to do some hill repeats. Small, short hill repeats. They add up fast, though! Ran one mile. Stopped to stretch. Ran up and down a hill 6 times (almost .75 miles, as it turns out) & continued til I hit another mile.

Small break. Then finished up with one more mile — originally I was just going to do .5 mile but figured it’s a nice day why not go the whole mile. I felt tired & sluggish, but it turned out to be the fastest mile — all three were relatively consistent, though, surprisingly — even the hill repeats.

As seen on the run (well, after the run)

Friday
Holy humidity, batman! I got out far too late for this run. I decided I would take a walk break each mile for water. Well, that turned into longer and longer walk breaks and then multiple walk breaks per mile disintegrating into run/walk intervals for the last half mile (and that last mile was way faster than the previous two, go figure).

Beginners warm up with a “brisk” 5 minute walk

Saturday
We were threatened with rain and/or thunderstorms. What we got was hot & humid with a few sprinkles at the end, which worked out because today it was 25 minutes of straight running and that’s a big jump for these ladies. Later it poured buckets!

Pre-bath. Yup, he got me with that tongue!

Favorites of the week
The Spring cleaning refers to giving the dogs baths today. We’ve finally found Spring, so we could do it outside. They do not enjoy it, but they’re generally pretty good about it. Which is why small dogs are a favorite of the week — they may squirm away, but ultimately there is no escaping the inevitable.

Matzo Brei. I did not take photos this year. Search my site and some will come up. Essentially it’s french toast made with crumbled up matzo and it’s my favorite thing about Passover. I wish I could eat it ever.single.day. I’ve even been known to make it after Passover is over, just to use up leftover matzo. It makes great running fuel — for me anyway.

I hope whether you’re celebrating something today or not, that you to enjoy a nice day (or cozy up inside).

Talk to me:

Do you still do baskets even if your children are grown?

Still in Winter or has Spring found you, too?

What was your favorite run of this week?

    1. When I was in grade school a friend made me a basket because she felt sorry for me!

I bet running will help you feel a little better. I remember my first few runs after Chester was gone it literally felt as though he was running with me — even though we really didn’t run together.

  1. I didn’t do any baskets this year, but I did get chocolate bunnies for my son and his finacee. I was hoping the Easter bunny would bring me a Reese’s egg or at least some licorice jelly beans, but I guess he just kept hopping by. :-/ I saw a few runners in tank tops this week, but it wasn’t that warm for my morning runs.

    1. Friday it was about 70 . . . but I started at 10:30! Sat was 8:30. & very muggy — it was cool waiting around but once we got running it was fine. Not long after we finished the skies really opened up though!

  2. . I didn’t wear a tank and skirt yesterday because I didn’t want to get wet but I wasn’t warm the way I was dressed.

Today was the best run because it was with friends and sunny and warm but not too warm. We did intervals and I could be a convert…it was painless. I guess we’ve switched. You’re trying to run straight and I’m trying intervals. We did half 4:1 and half 2:1.

  3. Sounds like a great week! We had some funky weather this week too – cold/chilly, then rainy, then humid, then back to rain, lol. The crazy downpours forced me to do my long run on the treadmill on Saturday.

  4. Although we had a couple of days with cold and windy temps, it does feel like Spring is here to stay. I’ve had mostly tank/short runs lately, and they feel so good (but I”m a warm weather gal). Thanks for joining us for the WRD!

  5. So when I first looked at that license plate I saw Nuts of Ast! LOLOLOLOL. One of my favorite things to do when I’m running (or driving) is to figure out cryptic license plates. Here’s one: 6UL DV8.

  6. Just decoded Wendy’s license plate above. Oh my! I first so SOFA in the one you posted. In my final week of taper the sofa and I are on intimate terms! Your matzo french toast sounds delish. I’ve been eating egg matzo like it’s my job. I wasn’t going to do baskets this year but then the Caveman reminded me this would be the last year before Thing 1 is off to college, so I did…and a massive egg hunt too.
So weird to see how hot and humid it is there! We got close to 80 yesterday finally but nowhere near enough to complain about yet.

    1. Mr. Judy had to decode it for me, but oddly enough, the one I posted I knew immediately what it said.

We have not gotten close to 80, but we have gotten into the 70s a few times (like today) and it’s a balm to my cold-weary soul.

  7. Sounds like a good week! At Seder on Friday night some friends and I were discussing ways to use the leftover matzoh. I am boring and just do toast, but my friend makes a killer granola with it. Your recipe sounds yummy too!

    1. I love my matzo brei. Unfortunately just can’t eat it too often. I actually don’t eat a lot of matzon during Passover, but OTOH, I don’t normally eat a lot of bread either so it’s not really a hardship.

  8. This weekend was so weird weather wise, cold/damp and humid, but two great runs. Could have done three but wanted the off day in Friday
    mmm matzo brei
I’m 39, I don’t think there’s been an easter without a basket. We’re not religious, but it’s fun tradition, see also: the cookies I texted you

  9. Well done on those hill repeats and the fact that you seemed to save the best one for last! My small dogs don’t like getting washed but yes, at least it’s easy to hold them down. The good thing is my Basset Hound LOVES baths which is a good thing as it wouldn’t be very easy to hold him down! My favourite run was definitely my internal training on Wednesday – tough, tough, tough but felt so good afterwards!

  10. yay for running this week!! even if was a bit of a struggle you got through it. the humidity never helps!

no Easter celebrations for us. As far as I know the Dutch don’t “do” baskets. I tried several different traditions with my stepkids but it was fairly hopeless so I gave up.

here it’s full on spring! I’m loving it!

  11. I DID look up matzo brei. It sounds delicious! I will have to try it.

Your Friday running group is big! Looks like a lot of fun. So glad to read that your mileage is going up. Spring always inspires me to run more often.

  12. Yes, I still make baskets for our sons, our daughter-in-law, our other son’s girlfriend, and of course Pablo! Poor Bill has fallen by the wayside, though. LOL

When it’s been humid here it’s been cool enough that it hasn’t been too miserable. We’ve had some severe storms and have been under tornado watch or warning three times in the last twelve days, but that hasn’t happened when I wanted to run.
