I Love You . . : Runfessions May 2017

. . . from a distance

I’m doing a duathlon this month: there’s a few swimfessions thrown in with my runfessions, because I finally got back in the pool. One time, at least.

Not that I’m actually going to be doing any racing that involves swimming; I just swim because it’s good cross training and I enjoy it.

Join me, Marcia @ Marcia’s Healthy Slice and other bloggers to see what we’re runfessing; if you haven’t joined us yet maybe it’s time to get outside your comfort zone!

Not smiling when the little old ladies crowd my space

I swimfess . . .
I don’t shower before I swim. Afterwards, yes, of course. But before? Who has time for that? There’s chlorine in the water, after all.

I also swimfess that I get ticked off with older ladies who feel the need to swim right next to me when there’s room to spread out more (the pool I swim at doesn’t use lane dividers — I sure wish they would!).

Finally, I swimfess that I also wondered just what stroke one of those older ladies was doing. It was like a hybrid between backstroke and butterfly — butterfly arms while on your back, if you can picture that. The problem, of course, is not how she looks, but the splashing.

Just don’t look at my breaststroke, which also isn’t quite normal — but at least I’m not splashing people!

I runfess . . .
I just realized I’ve been a month off with my runfessions. So now I will have two May runfessions. See, I told you I can’t count! Or tell what month it is, apparently.

Senior moment, anyone?

I runfess . . .
The calendar may say 2017, but now I’m looking at 2018 halfs. There’s something about knowing I have a race (or more) lined up for me after my next goal race that keeps me motivated.

Not that I actually plan to sign up for a 2018 race yet; I’m just looking.

I runfess . . .
That three half marathons in three months was a bit much. I don’t regret it; not at all. But it was just a wee bit tiring, since two of them were almost all the way across the country and the third was halfway across the country.

The travel, the travel to my parents house every weekend, the training . . . I wouldn’t say I’m burnt out, just more tired (than normal). If the races are compelling enough, though, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

Now we have crossed WA off the half marathon list, yet we still have to go there to visit relatives. I’ll just have to keep looking at the states that border WA — so far OR is the only state I’ve ever been to that borders WA, and I haven’t run a half there yet. Idaho is the only other state that actually borders WA.

So many states, so little time!

One & done in WA!

I did not hug or kiss my mother on Mother’s Day. What is it with my family, colds, and holidays shortly before my races?

Thanksgiving my sister and niece both had nasty colds — a week before I headed out for PCB Half; Mother’s Day, unfortunately, it was my mother’s turn (don’t worry, she’s fine) — 3 weeks before UT!

It’s been a week. I don’t think I’m in the clear yet, and last weekend’s chilly start to my long run and chilly dinner with wet hair probably weren’t helpful.

What weird shenanigans do you see in the pool or on the run?

Wouldn’t you like to get some runfessions off your mind? Come join us

  1. That’s awesome that you’re doing a duathlon! I’m the world’s worst swimmer so I always admire anyone doing a duathlon or triathlon!

It’s funny you mentioned looking at 2018 halfs because I’ve been doing the same thing!! I feel like it’s a bit early to start looking, but I can’t help myself, lol

  2. I’m still tired from my Fla vacation and it was in the same time zone. Change of time zones is what gets me cuz I’m an awful sleeper.

I’m still trying to figure out 2017. I will try to stay local except for Corning & LV.

2018 will probably include more locals (there are still some that I haven’t done yet) and Florida, of course.

      1. a lot left to do – I consider anything under 2 hours local so there are ones in MA, CT and of course, in NYS.

I bumped into a runner on Wed that runs in NYC a lot, she gets up at 2:30 am, drives in and then drives back. That is a little nuts.

  3. I only wish I could plan that far ahead. I’m afraid to sign up for a fall half at this point–I don’t know how I’ll be feeling so for now, I’m just playing it by ear.

I had so many stories when I did all that pool running last year! OMG.

    1. I always look for races I can defer. Too bad there aren’t more of them!

Between my parents & all the senior furkids . . . life happens. None of us ever knows.

Besides, I didn’t say I was signing up; just looking!

      Enjoy your weekend, Wendy!

  4. I have to sign up for local races about 6 months in advance because they fill up, but I don’t think I could commit too much further in advance. I didn’t witness shenanigans this week but the office gym was busier than usual – were people trying to get in shape for the pool this weekend? 😀

    1. LOL at people trying to get ready for the pool!

Not too many of our local races sell out & I tend to sign up last minute for a lot.

My fall half does — and did! — so I’m glad I’m signed up for that one!

  5. I’m with you… I am already looking at races in 2018. I haven’t registered for any besides the Houston Marathon, but I like to have something to look forward to and a plan to get there.

  6. Oooohhh, I love duathlons! I’ve done several and am planning on another this summer. I’m not a swim girl …I mean, I know how to swim and all, but not a fan of incorporating that into a race environment. So, with being said …Du’s are a fun challenge!

Three half’s in three months! You have been busy and I’m sure more than prepared for Utah! I’m just hoping to cruise down that mountain without any additional injury 🙂

    See you soon!

    1. I guess I should have made it clear that it was a “du” because I was talking about swimming & running.

I’m not sure you can prepare for elevation. Otherwise, yes, I’m prepared. And don’t forget, I’m the turtle in this group anyway!

My goals are pretty much the same. 🙂

  7. I get tired too when I squeeze a lot of activity in a condensed time, but you will never regret it 😀 It is a good kind of tired.
I hope you have fun at the Duathalon (sp??) I don’t even know how to breast stroke so no judgement here LOL

    1. One more time — I’m not doing a duathalon! I guess people don’t get my sense of humor. Sorry!

They call it training for a reason. The marathon is what — Oct? I forget. I think you have enough time. My summer running group basically starts now & aims for a marathon in Oct. (and of course I’m only doing a half, there’s both a half and a full group).

They basically start at almost nothing and train them up to run a full!

And you know what? If somewhere along the way you decide it’s not the right time for a full, maybe easing back in with a shorter distance is wiser. But definitely don’t throw in the towel before you’ve begun!

      1. OOPS, my bad. Sorry I didn’t catch the humor! LOL!!!
And yes, my marathon is in October, and I have until Sept. to defer until 2018 if I should so choose. We may have big changes coming our way, so I will see where the wind takes me this summer! 🙂
